Merchants of the public markets of Mexico City demonstrated this Wednesday to demand the cessation of the popular supply program, an initiative of city legislators and councilors aimed at facilitating access to basic food products at lower prices than those of popular markets.
As the sellers have reported in market establishments, this plan causes unfair competition that can generate a negative economic impact between 40% and 50%.
“They are affecting us between 22 and 30 million pesos (between 1.16 and 1.59 million dollars) daily (…) and the sale has dropped 30 or 40%, reaching 80% for colleagues who sell highly perishable products,” said Edgar Mendieta, spokesman for the movement, to the Mexican medium Wradio.

The protest, which began at 10 am (local time), blocked different points of the 16 mayors of the country’s capital causing the intervention of the city’s security forces to recover the roads.
Under the cry of “You are not a merchant, you are ruler!”, The protesters denounced that, through this plan, about 400 tons of basic products are distributed a week, which are stopped selling in their shops.
Therefore, they demand the cancellation of this program that they consider “pure proselytism” and that do not qualify as “social policies” despite the distributed products in order to improve the nutritional conditions and quality of life of the beneficiaries.
They pointed out that they will continue to manifest until an agreement is reached or this plan is canceled.
Only in Mexico City there are 353 public markets, according to data from the Ministry of Economic Development in 2024
