In Mexico City, 1,000 murals related to the 2026 Soccer World Cup will be painted in key places in the city, to “convert” the capital territory into a “large canvas” towards the greatest sporting event in international football, the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, indicated this Wednesday.

The first mural alludes to the pre-Hispanic ball game.

“This is the first of the 1,000 murals that we are going to carry out in Mexico City in key places, on the main avenues. And we are going to take up a diversity of themes towards the World Cup,” Brugada explained at a press conference.

He added that the metropolis “will become a great canvas” to transform it with projects and colors for the opening of the World Cup, on June 11 at the Mexico City stadium, formerly the Azteca stadium.

Brugada explained that the capital will host five matches, including the opening one, and will thus be the only city in the world to inaugurate a World Cup for the third time.

In addition, he proposed that June 11 be established as a holiday in the capital, so that girls, boys and families can experience the start of the tournament as a collective celebration.

“We want that day to stop a little and celebrate together that the World Cup begins in Mexico City,” he said.

The capital’s president also presented a carpentry mural made by people deprived of their liberty at the Oriente Prison.

Brugada highlighted “the fascinating artisan hands” of these people that are reflected through the replica of the poster proposed by FIFA for the country’s capital.

In this work, he explained, elements alluding to the city are presented, such as the taco al pastor, the pre-Hispanic ball game, the Angel of Independence, the trajineras of Xochimilco and the axolotl, among others.

Meanwhile, the head of the Secretary of Citizen Security, Pablo Vázquez, explained that it is a handmade work that is “part of the social reintegration processes” that the Mexico City prison system has and was made through an assembly of pieces.

Brugada pointed out that the tournament is an “accelerator of our goals as a city” and emphasized that the works and actions towards the 2026 World Cup will not be “glitz”, but rather infrastructure projects for citizens.

“They are works of mobility, services, water, drainage, lighting, urban improvement and tourist routes with a sporting and cultural experience. Works that will remain forever and that will serve the population,” he explained.

He recalled that on March 1, 2026, the largest soccer class in the world will take place, while on May 31, the largest ‘wave’ in the world will be organized, both events with the aim of breaking Guinness records and encouraging citizen participation.

The Mexican capital is one of the 16 cities in Mexico, the United States and Canada that will host the 140 matches of the biggest soccer festival that will begin on June 11.
