The European Commission (EC) asked the Chinese platform Shein this Wednesday to inform it about the measures it is taking to prevent minors from having access to illegal goods, “in particular child-like sex dolls and weapons.”
“Following the sale of illegal products in France and several public reports, the Commission suspects that the Shein system could pose a systemic risk to consumers throughout the European Union,” the Community Executive said in a statement.
For this reason, within the framework of the Digital Services Act (DSA), which obliges platforms to eliminate illegal content, the Community Executive asked the company to provide documentation with the measures it is carrying out to prevent the sale of illegal goods and, in particular, to prevent minors from accessing them.

Shein suspension in the European Union is ‘the last resort’
Brussels took this step three weeks after the French Government began court proceedings to block Shein in the French country and the vice president of the Community Executive in charge of digital policy, Henna Virkkunen, met with the French minister delegate for Digital Affairs, Anne Le Henanff, to analyze the issue.
Just yesterday it became known that the French Executive will ask the Court to suspend Shein for three months.
“Sex dolls have no place on the internet, weapons have no place on the internet, dangerous toys have no place on the internet. Thanks to the French authorities, we know that Shein has sold all of them in France and we take it very seriously,” said the Commission’s digital policy spokesperson, Thomas Regnier, at a press conference.
However, Regnier insisted that Brussels “does not want to suspend any platform in the EU” because that is “the last resort” provided for by the DSA.
