Celebrate the little victories

In the corporate field, we are trained to think strategically, to look at the goal and set ourselves objectives. That’s right and in reality, it must be. The work of a good leader is to cause the work team to align to the plan to get what has been proposed. It is true and for this it is very important to keep people motivated, united and with recognition. That is why it is very important to celebrate the small victories.

This week, I read about a party organized by a Delicatessen store in New York City to celebrate a specific sand variety. I was struck by a sand party – although it seemed delicious – it didn’t seem an occasion that I would have considered making a celebration. It intrigued me to know that in the Netherlands, this particular isna is traditionally fishing only for a few months, when the body fat of the herring reaches at least 16 percent, to obtain the maximum flavor. The Dutch even have an annual festival to honor the opening of the sand season. They celebrate the achievement of precision to fish that type of sand. It seems a trifle and maybe it is not.

Obviously, I had never crossed my head before the head, but it is true that I have sometimes forgotten to celebrate large achievements, the little ones are not said. We tend to limit our parties to milestones, we meet from a birthday cake, we rest the holidays, we go to cultural events and ask myself why it should be so. Sometimes, we are so busy that we do not celebrate the relevant.

Of course, if every day it is a special occasion, then no day is, but it seems unnecessary to let the calendar totally dictate when we must gather to raise a drink, applaud, recognize or thank. In addition, it is a bit boring to glorify the same things year after year, when there are so many other things that are worth it. Especially, now in which much of the professional field takes place through a screen and meet with people virtually. Maintaining the cohesion of a group of people we do not see, who can be living in different cities, with diverse schedules, with different maternal languages is very complex. Therefore, it is so important to celebrate the little victories.

Once we begin to consider all the microocasions that deserve a congratulation, we realize that we have let so many opportunities to celebrate those little victories that when adding them become a relevant lake.

Commemorate the completion of something we have been postponing always seems sensible. It is partly celebrated and partly motivation: the team members gather and force each other to do things that have been postponing, such as cleaning the inbox or responding old emails. The celebration can be productive and fun.

There are those who hate the parties, or who believe that the amount of meetings that arise from the standard occasions is more than enough. I tell them: it’s fine. It is true that in corporations where there are many people working, you have to dedicate one day to leave the cake for all the birthday girls of the month but there would be no time to work. But even thinking about the little things we could celebrate is an exercise in satisfactory gratitude.

These chances of recognition, these opportunities to thank you for well done work are significant and help keep the team spirit high. It is about reflecting on what are the good things that are not recognized in working life, analyze that we have been limiting or postponing the delight unnecessarily.

How many things do we leave for later because there is no milestone that deserves it? It happens personal and professional. We can think of trips, meetings, cravings. Recently, a friend told me that I couldn’t think of anything more luxurious and happily absurd than a seafood tower. “Well, your birthday has just passed, but next year?” Said another. Ha! As if necessary to wait a full year to have a pleasure to enjoy a seafood tower. Make an appointment with the doctor who had been postponing for a long time, go to the dentist and celebrate that the denture is healthy and that seems sufficient reason to gather a group of friends, ask for a tower and celebrate. Well, without falling into extremes, it is the leader’s work to celebrate these little victories.

I understand that these types of celebrations are directly related to corporate culture, the nationality of the company in which we work. That is, Mexicans are more But, it’s not about throwing the house out the window. It is an act of recognition.

These acts of recognition make us visible. They give our work team that awareness that we are working between human beings that, despite the social acceleration, of vertigo and the hurry, we realize the effort and value the ideas that have led us to reach certain successes, which lead us on the right path and cover us to the achievement of our goals.

An intelligent leader knows. He is aware and takes care of the motivation of his people. He knows how to give the impulse, knows the reason that leads a person to act, either to achieve a goal, satisfy a need or simply experience a feeling of satisfaction. Understand that it is an internal process that activates, directs and maintains the harmonic behavior that must be taken and attended to work well. It is true, the objective of a business is to generate profits and to do so we have that our team does what it should. And, once he does, the good leader must recognize and thank. It is an intrinsic form of motivation that activates the desire to overcome.

Therefore, celebrating small victories can activate virtuous circles that germinate personal, professional and corporate growth. These details are highly valued when the panorama becomes difficult, it drives to save obstacles, to forge new ideas, generate satisfaction and give impulse to work and achieve the sets raised. It is not a bad idea to celebrate the little victories and turn them into part of the strategy.
