The European Union will provide financing of 157 million euros to a joint Cemex CO2 capture project in Germany, the cement company reported on Tuesday.

“A consortium between Cemex and Linde, a leading global company in industrial gases and engineering, has been selected to receive 157 million euros from the European Union Innovation Fund. “This financing will go toward a pioneering CO2 capture project at Cemex’s cement plant in Rüdersdorf, Germany,” the company said in a statement.

The project seeks to capture 1.3 million metric tons of CO2 per year from cement production in order to decarbonize the facility by 2030, the company highlighted.

“The Rüdersdorf project is the largest that Cemex has undertaken to date and has all the necessary elements and capabilities to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the cement industry,” said Sergio Menéndez, president of Cemex Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia, in the statement.
