The CFE said that it operates with enough to maintain a continuous and reliable electricity supply to the increase in energy demand the summer window that begins in May.

The state company reported in a statement on Tuesday that this year the Operational Reserve Margin (MRO) in the National Interconnected System (SIN) has been higher on average in this period at 10%, and that in the case of June 9, the day there was a maximum demand of 52,945 MW, the
Mro was 9.69%.

MRO evaluates the available capacity regarding energy demand, a reserve margin that helps absorb unexpected consumption variations.

The CFE reported that regional systems worked during the summer window with even higher margins. Baja California reported on June 30 a MRO of 17.25% with a demand of 3,319 MW; Baja California Sur reached 11.82%, and in the Yucatan Peninsula and Quintana Roo on May 27, the maximum demand was 2,991 MW, with a Mro of 10.1%

The CFE stressed that these results are part of an integral preventive strategy launched since the beginning of the year, focused on ensuring operational capacity at times of maximum demand.

Among the main actions he stressed:

  • 270 maintenance of generating centrals, which together represent 27,923 MW, more than half of the daily electric consumption in Mexico.
  • Logistic Fuel Planning, prioritizing its availability during the weeks of greater demand.
  • The entry into operation of new combined cycle plants, such as Salamanca, Villa de Reyes and Mérida IV.
  • The recovery of units outside of service and the suspension of risky operational maneuvers at peak times.
  • Suspension of operational maneuvers that may put the operational reliability of the generating units at risk during the peak hours of greater demand for the national electrical system (SEN).
  • Keep in operation conditions that can be required its delivery of energy due to reliability of the SEN, which are additional to what is considered within the MRO that establishes the National Energy Control Center and represent up to 7% of electricity generation capacity.
  • Recovery of generation units that were out of operation during the past summer, which allowed to increase the MRO.

The CFE added that the entry into operation of new generation plants in the coming years, such as CCC Manzanillo III, Sauz II and González Ortega, as well as those provided in the Expansion Plan promoted by the Federal Administration, will strengthen the SEN and will allow to meet the present and future energy demand of the country.
