The Chamber of Deputies generally gave the green light to the reforms to the Amparo Law, despite the suspensive motions presented by the opposition, according to information from the Quadratín México agency.

The opinion was approved with 345 votes in favor, 131 against and three abstentions, which will allow adjustments to be made to various articles of the Constitution, the Federal Tax Code and the Organic Law of the Federal Court of Administrative Justice.

During the presentation of the project, the Morena deputy, Julio César Moreno, stated that the modifications were the result of an inclusive and deliberate process, with the aim of strengthening citizen rights and modernizing the amparo trial.

In contrast, Laura Ballesteros, representative of Movimiento Ciudadano, pointed out that the reform expands the power of the Executive and limits society’s legal tools to defend itself.

PRI member Rubén Moreira described the reforms as a threat to the rule of law and warned of possible authoritarian overtones that would put individual freedoms at risk.

From the Labor Party bench, Reginaldo Sandoval defended the proposal by highlighting its coherence with the principles of the self-called Fourth Transformation and its focus on renewing the judicial system.

In turn, María Luisa Mendoza, from the Green Party, supported the ruling and stressed the importance of establishing mechanisms to prevent excesses of authority.

PAN member Elías Lixa argued that the amparo trial should be a tool to protect the most vulnerable, not a way to consolidate the power of the government. He also warned that authorities must respect citizen rights without conditioning their exercise.
