Argentine musician and composer Charly García, winner of innumerable awards, including Latin Grammy to musical excellence in 2009, will deliver his legacy to the box of the letters of the Cervantes Institute in an intimate act at his home in Buenos Aires.

The director of Cervantes, Luis García Montero, will go to the musician’s home to receive a personal object that will be guarded by the Spanish institution until his entry into the box of letters at the Cervantine headquarters of Madrid.

This act is part of the Celebration of the Book Fair AIRES, which began on April 24 and will close its edition on May 12, 2025, and in which the Spanish institution has an outstanding presence, Cervantes reported on Wednesday in a statement.

Garcia is, at 73, one of the most emblematic musicians in Argentina, where he is known as ‘The father of rock’, although throughout his career he has composed songs of different genres that have marked several generations of the Latin American country.

Although his stage debut was in 1972 with his participation in the keyboard of the first album of Raúl Porchtto, called ‘Christ Rock’, his career was consolidated with Nito Mestre, Carlos Piegari, Beto Rodríguez and the Belia brothers, with whom he formed the Sui Generis band.

They recorded three albums: ‘Life’ (1972), ‘Winter confessions’ (1973) and ‘Small anecdotes about the institutions’ (1974), with which they reached international fame, until their separation (already turned into a duo) in 1975 with two concerts in the Luna Park of Buenos Aires in which ‘Goodbye Sui Generis’ were recorded.

After passing through bands such as Suigieco or the Machine Machine, led the Serú Girán group, until he threw himself as a soloist in 1982 by publishing emblematic songs such as ‘I don’t want to go so crazy’, ‘Demoling hotels’ or ‘Chipi Chipi’.

Garcia has also composed music for cinema and has even participated in films such as ‘What will come’ (1988) or ‘Mercedes Sosa, like a free bird’ (1983).

Since 2008 the musician has suffered serious health problems that have even forced him to use a wheelchair, but in 2024 he threw the album ‘the logic of the scorpion’.
