China accused the United States on Wednesday, during a meeting in the World Trade Organization (WTO), violating international commercial regulations and weakening the multilateral trade system with its so -called reciprocal tariffs.

The China delegation said there is no “reciprocity” in the general increase in tariffs issued by President Donald Trump, but a prioritization of the interests of the United States, to the detriment of the legitimate rights of other countries.

He recalled that the United States is one of the main beneficiaries of the multilateral trade system and that evaluating its benefits taking into account only commercial deficits or surpluses of goods is a misleading approach.

“The so -called reciprocal tariffs are not and will never be a solution for commercial imbalances. On the contrary, they will have a counterproductive effect and will harm the US himself,” said a Chinese diplomat.

Along these lines, Asia’s greatest commercial power asked all WTO members to stay united in the defense of the multilateral trade system that works based on the norms approved by all.

China made these comments at a meeting of the WTO Assets Council, which proposed a debate on this issue under the point of the agenda entitled “Commercial concerns.”

EU does not see the purpose of China’s accusations before WTO

Several delegations intervened and expressed that they share China’s position at several points, as well as the conviction that generalized tariffs are not a solution to US commercial concerns and that solutions should be sought through dialogue within the framework of the WTO.

They also expressed concern about the negative economic impact of tariffs, which will be reflected in the increase in costs, interruption of supply chains and damages for both developed and development economies.

It was emphasized that developing countries and the least advanced are especially vulnerable and face particularly high customs rights that could seriously affect their economic development.

For his part, EU declared that he did not see any purpose in which China registered this point in the agenda of the meeting since he had already denounced this situation before the instance of dispute resolution.

He also said that Thursday will make a statement – on the second day of this meeting – and that it will focus on new tariffs and their relationship with national security.
