The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Geological Survey of China reported the recent discovery of 20 million tons of copper in the Tibetan Plateau, the state broadcaster CCTV reported this Monday.
Four large copper resource bases were identified, identified as Yulong, Duolong, Julong-Jiama and Xiongcun-Zhuno, in what is known as the “roof of the world”, located in the west of the Asian giant.
Experts estimate that the total potential amount of copper in the area could reach 150 million tons, positioning the Tibetan Plateau, also known as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, as a future center of copper resources worldwide, the official media highlighted. .
Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Tang Juxing, quoted by CCTV, highlighted the strategic relevance of copper as a key metal in the development and use of green energy.
“The demand for copper is crucial for technologies such as solar energy and onshore and offshore wind, as well as for the manufacturing of electric vehicles,” the expert explained.
Likewise, Tang stressed that the increase in Chinese reserves of this resource strengthens the supply chain and ensures the sustainability of the copper sector in the Asian country.

China will seek to continue protecting the Tibet plateau despite mining
The authorities announced that they will continue to intensify exploration efforts through the use of advanced technologies and strategic projects.
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, also known as the “Third Pole” and similar in size to Argentina, acquired growing economic importance due to its vast reserves of minerals and energy resources.
Last year, China approved a law for the environmental protection of this plateau, the largest in the world, where certain construction and mining activities will be limited and in some cases prohibited.
The frozen water stored in the plateau feeds rivers such as the Ganges, Indus, Mekong, Yangtze and Yellow and supplies hundreds of millions of people on the Asian continent with water resources for irrigation, consumption and energy.
