Preliminary plans for the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), led by China and Russia, include the construction of a nuclear reactor on the lunar surface, as a presentation of a Chinese space manager showed on Wednesday.

The presentation of Pei Zhaoyu, chief engineer of the Chinese Chang’e-8 mission of 2028, showed that the base energy supply could also depend on large-scale solar panels, which would be built on the lunar surface.

Chinese mission Chang’e-8 aims to lay the foundations for the construction of a permanent manned lunar base. The second world economy aspires to become a great spatial power and alunizar astronauts in 2030.

China’s calendar to build an advanced position in the South Pole of the Moon coincides with the NASA Artemis program, more ambitious and advanced, which aims to return US astronauts to the lunar surface in December 2025.

Wu Weiren, academic from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chief Designer of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Project, said a “basic model” of Ilrs, with the South Pole of the Moon as a core, by 2035.

The launches of the Chang’e lunar probe are part of the construction phase of the “basic model” outlined by Wu.

In the future, China will create the “Project 555”, inviting 50 countries, 500 international scientific research institutions and 5,000 foreign researchers to join Ilrs.
