Chrono Trigger Remake Leak Teases Return Of Iconic Square Enix JRPG

It’s hard to talk about Chrono Trigger, because for decades, fans have heartily enjoyed it so much that it’s become ubiquitous when talking about all-time JRPGs.

But over on ResetEra, a leaker claims the series is returning in a re-release. If this pans out, it could be one of the most celebrated remakes of the past decade.

Is Chrono Trigger Really Coming Back?

At Some Point, You Can Bet On It

Square Enix’s worst-kept secret, seemingly, is a Chrono Trigger remake/remaster. It’s one of the most iconic games of all time (not just in the JRPG genre), so like Final Fantasy 7, it’s a matter of when, not if, a re-release is coming. Yet another leak has popped up, potentially cementing its existence.

Here’s the full message from leaker John Harker, who has historically leaked various confirmed games, including Assassin’s Creed: “The Chrono stuff is already in dev tho. Let’s ask for something else, like opening back up Triangle Strategy 2 or a legit sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics.”

There have been several leaks about Chrono Trigger in the past few years, though talk of a remaster or re-release has constantly been rumored since the JRPG giant was ported to PS1 and Nintendo DS. Since then, fans have clamored for a remake, and other than a Steam release in 2018, we haven’t gotten much in the way of Chrono Trigger.

Fans are already speculating what this re-release could entail, and whether it’ll be a full remake or a remaster. One fan writes: “I’ve always felt that Squeenix [Square Enix] will do an HD2D remake of this game. Would be a bit disappointed as the original SNES art still looks great and would something more in line with the pixel remasters.”

Everyone seems torn over what an ideal remake could entail (from the art style to new content), but at least all Chrono Trigger fans can agree that the original is fantastic.

The Square Enix JRPG Has Been Gone Too Long

It Deserves Another Re-Release At Least

Barring the Steam port of Chrono Trigger, Square Enix hasn’t pushed the series much since 2018. We may see a greater shift from the company to get back to basics in the next 10 years, though, and a Chrono Trigger remake or remaster could slot nicely into that strategy. It would be hard to screw up, but that’s likely why the studio is taking its sweet time to get it right.

If you’re a Chrono Trigger fan, you know how well the game still holds up, whether it’s on the original Super Nintendo hardware or on various other platforms. You’ve waited this long, what’s another year (or ten)?
