A new RPG on Steam can be tried out for free now, and fans of classic The Legend of Zelda games will likely enjoy themselves with the nostalgia. The classic Nintendo franchise is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year. There are already a few The Legend of Zelda anniversary celebrations underway, like new merch, but there is no bigger praise than indie games that pay tribute to it.
One such game that pays tribute to the Nintendo franchise is a new indie title called Echo Isle, developed by Josh Koenig Games. This is a mini-adventure game that is heavily inspired by classic games of the 1990s, boasting a vibrant pixel-art style. The game has yet to be released, as seen on its Steam page, though there isn’t a specific date just yet. Even so, you can test it out for free right now.
Echo Isle Looks An Awful Lot Like Zelda
The Indie Game Is Inspired By 1990s Classics
While the developer states that the Echo Isle is inspired by 1990s games, the game is clearly inspired by classic Zelda games. In the indie game, you’ll control Aster, a warrior whose job is to banish the darkness. Aster will brand their sword as they face off against foes to progress through the story. Their main job is to locate four legendary Echo Stones, which will help bring peace to the world.
To do this, you’ll explore four different ruins, each of which culminates in a unique boss fight. In addition to its themes, which seem very similar to older The Legend of Zelda titles, Echo Isle also looks like the Nintendo franchise, aesthetically speaking. The top-down pixel-art style is reminiscent of the original Zelda: Link’s Awakening, as well as several other Game Boy titles.
As is heavily reinforced by the developer, Echo Isle is going to be a mini-adventure. It is expected that the game will last a short bit, as the developer states that you’ll be able to finish it in one sitting. Despite being an adventure, the indie title is described as a cozy game.

Even though the game has yet to have its release date announced, you can already play the game, at least partially. On its Steam page, you can download and play the Echo Isle demo. According to the developer, the demo is fairly generous, as it essentially covers a quarter of the game. You’ll be able to play everything up until you obtain the first of the four aforementioned Echo Stones.
Even if you decide not to purchase the full game when it is eventually released, you should check out Echo Isle. This is a promising new RPG on Steam, and if you’re a fan of Zelda games, you may be delighted.
