The health status of the Colombian senator Miguel Uribe was aggravated on Monday by a persistent cerebral edema and an intracerebral bleeding of difficult control, so his condition is extremely critical, the Santa Fe clinic reported after it was subjected to an emergency surgical intervention.

Uribe, 39 and aspiring to the candidacy of the opposition Democratic Center for the 2026 presidential elections, received two shots in the head and one in the left leg more than a week ago, when he participated in a political meeting in the west of Bogotá.

“Miguel Uribe Turbay left surgery and his condition is extremely critical characterized by persistent brain edema and intracerebral bleeding of difficult control,” said an official statement. “Therefore, the patient’s condition is of maximum gravity.”

The politician underwent a surgical intervention over the weekend, but on Monday a bleeding was detected that forced doctors to take him back to the operating room.

Uribe is a strong critic of the peace policy of the leftist president Gustavo Petro and promotes the free company, as well as the recovery of security facing drug trafficking and illegal armed groups.

Thousands of people left Sunday to the streets of the main cities of Colombia in the so -called “March of Silence” to reject violence and ask for the prompt recovery of the politician.

The authorities investigating the attack have not yet established the causes of the attack or who ordered it.

The attack, recorded in dozens of videos released by social networks, shocked Colombia, caused convictions and recalled the violence that hit the country more than three decades ago, when four presidential candidates were killed in attacks attributed to drug traffickers allied with paramilitary squads.

Uribe’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona, requested a prayer for the recovery of the politician.

“With my heart in my hand, I have to tell you that it is fighting the most difficult battle we had traveled to this day. That’s why I go out to ask each of the Colombians (…) to make a massive prayer. Today is crucial,” he said in a statement to journalists.

A 15 -year -old girl accused of shooting against the senator was apprehended minutes after the attack, while during the investigations two other people were captured accused of having participated in the logistics and organization of the attack.

The main dissident faction of the former guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) denied Friday to be responsible for the attack on Uribe, although he did accept the authorship of a series of bomb attacks in the southwest of the country.

Uribe comes from an outstanding political family.

His grandfather Julio César Turbay was president between 1978 and 1982 and his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, died in 1991 in a failed rescue attempt while remained kidnapped by the Medellín poster that directed drug trafficker Pablo Escobar.
