The marines deployed in the Los Angeles area by order of the US President, Donald Trump, have not yet been called to intervene in the protests linked to the recent migratory raids and will only take care of federal officials and buildings, confirmed on Tuesday the commander of the Marine Infantry, Eric Smith.

According to The Washington Post newspaper, Smith declared in a budget audience in the Capitol that the 700 Marines who received the order of transfer to the second largest city in the US had been trained to control crowds but have no authority to make arrests.

So far, Trump has authorized a total of 4,000 members of the California National Guard plus the navy troops, without the authorization of the governor of the golden state, Gavin Newsom, an unprecedented event in the last 60 years.

This Tuesday, the California government submitted an emergency application to the Court of the Northern District of California requesting an order that prevents the Pentagon to expand the current mission of the Federalized Personnel of the National Guard of California and the Marine Infantry, but was rejected by the Charles R. Breyer district judge.

The judge scheduled a hearing for Thursday in which California and the federal government are expected to present their arguments about whether or not the use of troops in these tasks should be allowed.

This deployment has intensified the discontent among the protesters who in the protests ask for the withdrawal of the troops and the ICE agents of the city.

Trump said Tuesday that, if necessary, he will invoke the insurrection law to militarily dissolve the protests unleashed in Los Angeles against migratory raids.

The insurrection law, promulgated in 1807, grants the president to deploy the army to suppress episodes of civil disorder, and is considered one of the most overwhelming emergency powers in the country.

“If there is an insurrection, I would undoubtedly invoke it. We’ll see. But I can tell you that last night it was terrible. The previous night was also terrible,” Trump said before the press in the oval office.
