The National Water Commission (Conagua) said that the increase in water extracted from the La Amistad Dam, in Coahuila, is for the supply of the northwest zone of Mexico and not to comply with the Water Treaty with the United States dating from 1944.

In a statement, the Conagua indicated that “last Sunday the extraction to the Friendship dam was increased; however, this is not related in any way to comply with the 1944 waters treaty.”

He explained that “it is an ordinary procedure” of the Friendship and Falcón dam system, which together supply 13 cities, as well as the irrigation district 025, “so it is common for water to pass from one prey to another to complement the supply to the northwest area of Mexico.”

On Sunday, the mayor of the municipality of Acuña, Emilio de Hoyos, where the dam is located, warned that the extraction of the liquid was to fulfill the treaty with the United States and this action could “empty the prey at an alarming level”, which, he said, is 12% of his capacity due to drought.
