Infonavit is an institution with a great capacity to manage workers’ resources, but it is not capable of building, and when it did, it was a failure, stated the national president of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC). Luis Méndez Khaled.
“Assigning direct construction functions to Infonavit is not the best alternative to expand the supply of social housing,” he told journalist Alicia Salgado in Enfoque Noticias.
Yesterday Infonavit announced the creation of a construction company to achieve the goal of laying foundations for one million new homes for this six-year period.
Half of the homes will be built by the institute with a budget of 288,000 million pesos, while the rest will be carried out by the National Housing Commission with an investment of 285,000 million and another 15,000 million for 300,000 renovations.

Méndez Khaled told the radio station that the worker will no longer have the freedom to choose between different housing options as the offer is limited with Infonavit as the builder.
“Today there are more than 7,000 home construction companies and they represent an important economic engine,” he highlighted.
He also considered that there will be a conflict of interest as Infonavit is the administrator of the worker’s resources and also a home builder.
However, he said that the sector he presents is open to dialogue to carry out other types of exercises for housing construction.
He highlighted that 73% of housing in the country is informal, and that there is a gap made up of one million missing houses and 8 million more that exist, but are in many deteriorations.
He asserted that 9 million homes are abandoned due to bad public policies from other years.
