The 2026 World Cup will involve historic investments in urban infrastructure, transportation, airports and stadiums in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey with amounts that will exceed 8 billion dollars together, according to the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex).

The employer organization added in an information sheet that the event will generate 5.5 million additional visitors in Mexico, an economic impact of more than 3 billion dollars, as well as a relevant boost to employment, tourism and productive activity.

“The 2026 World Cup must be assumed not only as a sporting event, but as an opportunity to build a lasting economic and social legacy,” he said.

“To achieve this, it is necessary to strengthen key conditions such as security, the rule of law, legal certainty and sufficient and competitive energy that drives investment,” he added.

The confederation announced the creation of its Sports Commission to recognize soccer as a strategic industry with an impact on economic growth, investment, formal employment and social cohesion.

He explained that the announcement was made in a dialogue with Mikel Arriola, commissioner of the Mexican Soccer Federation, and Gabriela Cuevas, Mexico’s representative to FIFA for the 2026 World Cup.

He added that during this dialogue it was highlighted that Mexican soccer is an economic pillar, as it contributes around 0.6% of the national GDP and more than half of the sports GDP, generates 147.3 thousand direct and indirect jobs and concentrates a base of more than 62 million fans in the country.

He stressed that Liga MX, valued at around 13 billion dollars, is positioned among the leagues with the highest attendance and fans worldwide, which makes soccer a key platform for investment and regional development.
