The six-year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador accumulated historical records of violence in the areas of homicides, extortion and business robbery, which is why security strategies must be rethought, according to the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (COPARMEX).

In the previous administration, 188,994 intentional homicides were recorded, with a daily average of 89 murders, according to monitoring by the bosses’ leadership.

He indicated that if femicides are added, the total rises to 194,519 victims and among the most affected entities are Colima, Baja California and Zacatecas, while Yucatán, Coahuila and Aguascalientes maintained the lowest levels.

In the case of extortion, 57,424 victims were counted, which is equivalent to more than one every hour, and the most affected entities are the State of Mexico, Zacatecas and Colima, in contrast, Tlaxcala, Yucatán and Chihuahua reported the lowest rates.

Regarding business robbery, there were 527,859 complaints, with an average of 248 cases daily, of which 45% involved violence.

“October 2024 reflected a significant increase in this crime, standing out among the most critical months in terms of business insecurity,” Coparmex added about the first month of Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration.

He indicated that the situation is particularly serious in Sinaloa, where homicides have increased 43% compared to the previous year, and that Culiacán accounted for 54% of the murders recorded in the entity.

“Coparmex reiterated its position regarding the constitutional reforms related to the
security, highlighting that the transition from the National Guard to the Army contravenes the principle
of civil control and puts the rule of law at risk,” he said in a statement.

“In addition, they expressed concern about the 36% reduction in the budget of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, and other items related to Security, which could limit the effectiveness of the strategies implemented.” he added.

The national president of the organization, José Medina Mora Icaza, emphasized that these findings are an urgent call to rethink strategies that prioritize intelligence, prevention and justice, with emphasis on Sinaloa.

“We demand that the authorities recover that security, justice and peace as something necessary for the development of the country and for the daily life of people and families,” he said.

“Only with a joint effort between authorities, companies and society will it be possible to build an environment of peace and legality. Because more and better companies are not possible without security, and security is the basis for a prosperous and inclusive Mexico, he maintained.
