MEXICO CITY.- Extortion to the productive sector in Mexico during the first semester reached 5,887 victims, the highest figure since it has been registered, according to the employer Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex).
The data means an increase of 6.9% compared to the same 2024 and 83% period in 10 years, according to the employer.
At the state level, Guanajuato, Morelos and the State of Mexico presented the highest rates and by municipalities Cuautla, Salamanca and San Miguel de Allende stood out, the Coparmex reported based on data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.
Extortion limits the formal operation, imposes illegitimate costs and destroys trust, so a firm, comprehensive and without tolerance response is required, said Jorge Peñuñuri Pantoja, president of the National Security and Justice Commission of the agency, according to a statement.
He pointed out the urgency of the Confederation to have a general extortion law that unifies criteria, avoid impunity and allow effectively to combat this crime that affects companies, especially micro, small and medium.
Therefore, he said, since 2023 Coparmex have promoted a constitutional reform that supports that law and celebrated that President Claudia Sheinbaum has presented an initiative in that direction, to which the organization will follow up in Congress to ensure that it progresses with the appropriate legislative process.
He added that Coparmex accompanies the proposal for the creation of specialized anti -sectors units to strengthen intelligence against crime, and promote the use of line 089 to denounce all extortion modalities, including indirect ones by telephone or social networks.
He pointed out that with a black figure of 96.7%, it is urgent that the victims feel confidence to denounce and thus give key information to the authorities to identify, pursue and punish those responsible.
The Coparmex presented on Monday the results of its most recent security monitor, an edition that comprised from January to June.

Peñuñuri Pantoja presented the murder indicator and pointed out that during the first six months of the year, 13,090 victims were recorded, which represented a decrease of 15.8% compared to the same period of 2024.
He also warned about the strong concentration of violence in some regions. Colima, Sinaloa
and Morelos lead the list with rates between 55 and 80 victims per 100,000 inhabitants.

He added that only the amount assigned to National Security and Police in the Federation Expenditure Budget was reduced in 2025, from 0.7% of GDP in 2024 to 0.5% of GDP.
