It has been a very long road to release for Crimson Desert, the ambitious open-world action adventure game from Pearl Abyss, the studio best known for its ongoing MMO Black Desert Online. Crimson Desert was unveiled in late 2020 with ambitions of launch roughly a year later, but was delayed indefinitely in 2021 so that significant portions of its gameplay could be reworked.

Crimson Desert has been a game to keep an eye on for quite some time, if only because it claims transformative inspirations like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2, both revolutionary open-world games and among the best games of all time. Pre-release impressions of Crimson Desert have been quite strong, and it could potentially become a Game of the Year competitor, so below is a breakdown of everything you need to know about Pearl Abyss’s upcoming game.

Crimson Desert Release Date

March 19, 2026

Crimson Desert releases on March 19, 2026, entering a crowded month of major releases. Releasing on March 19 gives Crimson Desert two weeks of room following a heavyweight bout between Pokémon Pokopia, Marathon, and Slay the Spire 2, which all come out on March 5. Crimson Desert isn’t alone on March 19—it’s going up against Death Stranding 2‘s PC release, Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Editions Remastered, and Mouse: P.I. For Hire—but it definitely has a claim to the day’s headliner.

Crimson Desert Platforms

Relatively High-End Hardware Required

On March 19, Crimson Desert launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Mac. For those last two, the minimum and recommended system requirements are listed on Crimson Desert‘s Steam page. One particular requirement quirk of note is that, if you’re playing on macOS, you cannot have an Intel processor—you must have an Apple silicon chip.

There has been some pre-release drama about those former two platforms, Crimson Desert‘s console version. Pearl Abyss’s PR and Marketing Director Will Powers recently tweeted in frustration over suspicions of the developer being cagey with console footage. Potential buyers are worried about a launch-day fiasco à la Cyberpunk 2077, but Powers insists Pearl Abyss is “not hiding anything.”

And he’s right. Crimson Desert‘s release date was announced at the State of Play in September 2025 with a trailer claiming it was made entirely with footage captured on a PS5 Pro. The obvious caveat here is that the Pro is a step above the base PS5, not to mention the Xbox Series S. This lone trailer hasn’t been enough to assuage concerns, though, given Crimson Desert has had numerous extended gameplay showcases with PC footage.

At the time of writing, there has been no official word on whether Crimson Desert will eventually receive a Nintendo Switch 2 port. With the performance concerns, an original Switch release seems entirely out of the question. But if Pearl Abyss can get it running well on Series S, perhaps there’s hope for the Switch 2 later down the line.

Open-World Action-Adventure

crimson-desert-press-image-7.jpg

Despite Pearl Abyss’s experience with MMORPGs, Crimson Desert is not being promoted as an RPG. Instead, it is an action-adventure game set in an expansive open-world environment. It boasts third-person action combat, both mounted and on foot, with a variety of both ranged and melee weapons. Pre-release gameplay footage has focused on lengthy attack combos that utilize special skills, spells, and weapon quick-swapping to chain strikes together.

Crimson Desert still features RPG-adjacent features in its numerous skill trees. As you progress through the game, you will unlock and upgrade skills for three characters: Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka. Skill progression alongside incremental gear upgrades will be the primary avenues through which your characters gain strength in Crimson Desert.

Exploration is another key pillar in Crimson Desert‘s open-world gameplay. The continent of Pywel is divided politically into five regions, and gameplay footage has stressed that simply finding your own path through the game world is part of the intended experience. Pearl Abyss’s hope is that players will become immersed in Crimson Desert thanks to reactive NPCs and unexpected open-world interactions.

Breath of the Wild and its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, appear to be significant inspirations in this regard, with a variety of puzzles to find both scattered about the continent and on floating islands in the sky. This floating realm is called the Abyss and its latent magic is what allows Kliff to begin learning the game’s manipulation and combat techniques.

Crimson Desert is often also compared to Red Dead Redemption 2 and The Witcher 3 for its variety of activities and the serendipitous nature of its side quests. Fishing and gambling are among the activities you can partake in, and there appears to be no shortage of strangers in odd circumstances asking for your help. It appears to be a fairly lengthy game, but Crimson Desert is no doubt keeping some secrets for players to discover after it releases on March 19.
