The arrest of Guillermo ‘Billy’ Álvarez reflects the transformation movement that the country and its justice institutions are experiencing, said the Cruz Azul Cooperative.
“Likewise, we recognize Mexico’s progress towards the ‘end of impunity’ and the consolidation of the rule of law, for the benefit of companies, workers and Mexican society in general,” he said in a statement.
The former president of the organization was arrested this Thursday by elements of the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.
‘Billy’, who was a fugitive from justice since 2020, is accused of organized crime during his time at the head of the Cruz Azul Cooperative.

Álvarez, 79, was accused of committing fraud and million-dollar diversions during his time at the head of the cooperative, which began in 1988 and ended in 2020, when he began to flee from the authorities.
The business group recognized the authorities for “their prompt and expeditious response to the call we made last Monday, January 13.”
“We fully trust that this judicial mandate that does justice to the struggle of all our partners and workers will be carried out,” he said.
