One of the greatest concerns of this government at the beginning of its administration exactly a year ago, was the lack of money, such as getting it and above all how to identify the leaks of tax income.
The main red focus in that regard was fiscal evasion in its different aspects and very particularly through customs, only in the field of the so -called “fiscal huachicol” it is estimated that in the last year of the last government, five hundred fifty billion pesos were stopped perceiving for that concept.
The import of fuels using different tariff fractions to which they really correspond was not only a gap against tax income, derived in a scheme of illegal simulations and complicities.
To face this problem, the new government had the imperative need to obtain more resources and reestablish the empire of the law, to make pragmatic decisions and for this reason an efficient and committed inter -institutional coordination imposed, in which all the holders of the units involved work with strong determination in the same objective, as it did not happen in the past.
A clear example of this is that since last February Rafael Marín Mollinedo was appointed as head of the National Customs Agency, tax collection has increased in historical ranges by 18 % compared to the same period of the previous year.
We are talking about more than one billion pesos so far, which have been a fundamental support for national public finances. This is a notable effort that by itself makes a transcendental difference in the way this government does things.

Customs collection reaches historical levels
While it is true that these problems take time to eradicate themselves completely considering the corrupting element that motivates them, it is recognized that the strategy of the so -called “cleaning operation” is worked with results in sight.
It is a turning point in the role that customs play as a strategic source for national public finances, since the management headed by the head of the National Customs Agency has promoted more strict control, through a series of measures, among which the technological modernization of processes and the rotation of personnel.
These actions, although initially they generated bottlenecks in the release of goods, led to a tangible increase in collection and at the same time greater certainty for importers who do comply with the law.
It was a tough decision that had to be made to redirect the proper transit of the products and their correct payment of taxes, but simultaneously a blunt message for smugglers, customs agents and the institution’s own officials, with respect to the seriousness of the operation and that it will not be reversed.
A case of reference is that of the textile industry, one of the sectors that has begun to perceive the effects of this strategy since it was traditionally the most affected by the unfair competition of smuggling, which now observes a more balanced environment.
Entrepreneurs in the sector indicate that the fight against irregular entry of goods has opened the door to a more fair competition and better market conditions.
Beyond the collection, the strengthening of customs control not only ensures greater fiscal income, it also helps to lay more solid bases for the national industry and for the trust of investors.
