Eight years from the 2017 earthquake, victims of multifamily Tlalpan denounced Thursday that they face the risk of forced displacement of their community, amid death threats against a member of the Neighborhood Assembly and his young son.

In a statement, the victims, who amount to more than 20 thousand, affirmed that the aggressors left a document with direct threats and that there are videos where their face is shown.

According to the complaint, those responsible claim to have links with officials of the Attorney General of Mexico City (FGJCDMX), in addition to having the collaboration of corrupt lawyers and shock groups.

“The complaint of this fact is filed before the FGJCDMX, which has not carried out any action since then,” said the neighbors, who demanded the prosecutor Bertha Mayor Luján to order urgent measures to protect the life and integrity of women and her son, as well as open an investigation into the possible collusion of officials.

The victims recalled that, after the 2017 earthquake, they began a movement to defend the right to housing. “Our fight made thousands of people return home despite the totally opposite intention of the State,” they said.

The affected neighbors warned that they face a new crisis marked by real estate speculation, gentrification and the increase in housing in the Mexican capital.

“This phenomenon of displacement is not a coincidence; it is the consequence of urban policies that benefit capital and real estate speculation above the needs of people,” they said.

The neighborhood assembly of the Multifamily Tlalpan expressed its solidarity with other communities that have suffered recent emergencies, such as the explosion of a gas pipe in Iztapalapa last week, which claimed the lives of 25 people, and called to defend the right to remain in their homes against the progress of the great capitals.

“We do not fight just for a building, we struggle to reconstruct our homes, for the roots and for the security of getting home,” said the victims, who warned that they will defend their heritage “at the expense of what is necessary.”

On September 19, 2017, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 with epicenter between Puebla and Morelos, center of the country, left about 370 dead, 228 of them in Mexico City.

The emotional impact was greater because that same date, but of 1985, an earthquake of 8.1 occurred that left more than 20,000 dead, most of the Mexican capital, so it is considered the most destructive in the recent history of Mexico.

President Claudia Sheinbaum reminded the victims of the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017 on Friday, in a ceremony that consisted of raising the flag in front of the National Palace, where she swore that her government has worked in prevention.
