David Beckham, former player of Manchester United and Real Madrid, among others, and of the English national team, has been crowned a knight by King Charles III this Tuesday for his services to football and British society.

The 50-year-old former footballer was nominated in the king’s honors list last Christmas and was declared a knight, meaning he will carry the ‘Sir’, in a ceremony held this Tuesday in Berkshire (England).

“I couldn’t be more proud of that. People know how patriotic I am and how much I love my country. I’ve always said how important the monarchy is to my family. I’ve been very lucky during my life to travel around the world and all the people wanted to ask me about our monarchy. That makes me very proud,” Beckham said.

Raised in the Manchester United youth academy, Beckham spent eleven years with the Mancunians before leaving for Real Madrid in 2003 after having won several Premier Leagues and a Champions League. He could not replicate United’s success with the ‘whites’, with whom he only won one Spanish league in the four years he was there, but he left a great impact in the Madrid capital before leaving for the LA Galaxy.

During his stay in Los Angeles, Beckham had two loan spells at Milan and one at Paris Saint Germain until he ended his career in 2013 and became the owner of an MLS franchise, the current Inter Miami, which has Leo Messi and Luis Suárez in its ranks.

At international level, Beckham played 115 games for England, was captain for six years and played in two World Cups and two European Championships.

Off the playing field, in addition to his role as a model, Beckham has been known for his charitable actions, being a Unicef ambassador since 2005.
