One of the leads of a scrapped DC superhero movie finally opens up about Warner Bros.’s shocking cancellation.

Initially set to debut as an HBO Max Original, Warner Bros.’s Wonder Twins movie ended up being cancelled, and after four years, one of the leading actors shares their reaction to the project getting scrapped. Isabel May, who was set to play Jayna, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the film getting axed, saying, “Most things fall apart, and you have to be okay with that. You have to be capable of just taking the punch on the chin, standing back up, walking forward, stepping into the next one.”

The 1883 veteran continued, “I was not familiar with that whole world of DC and all that stuff.” As she was set to co-star alongside Riverdale’s KJ Apa, who would have played Zan, she added, “People told me it was a big gig and I went with it. I thought it was actually really funny, and I really liked the creative team behind it. I’ve worked with KJ since then. He was just a gem of a human, and I adore him.”

While they never got around to filming, May confirmed that they did go through a costume fitting. She stated, “You get flown out, you try on costumes, and suddenly, like a week after the announcement, you get a call from the director saying, ‘Well, David Zaslav is in power now and all of these things have shifted and he doesn’t wanna do this film.’ And, like, I get it.”

In the end, she was “not upset about it or anything. I get it. It’s just the way that the business functions and it’s all OK, but you suddenly this thing you that was gonna be a part of your future for a certain amount of time is suddenly just not there. So now you have to reassess.”

The Wonder Twins movie was put into development back in February 2022, with Black Adam’s Adam Sztykiel penning the script, as he was set to make his directorial debut with the superhero project. May and Apa landed the roles in April before the project was shelved in May of that year.

Wonder Twins was reportedly also cancelled due to budget reasons, as Warner Bros. Discovery was looking to take the DC brand in a new direction. That same year, the Batgirl movie was famously cancelled despite having already filmed it and entered post-production.

The DCEU movie timeline concluded in 2023, with James Gunn’s DC Universe replacing the decade-old franchise. While there haven’t been any official talks about the Wonder Twins in the DCU, Zan and Jayna could always get their due later.
