The governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, confirmed the death of Marco Segundo, 81, who is the 24th fatality of the fire and explosion at the Waldo’s store, which occurred on Saturday in Hermosillo.
The man had been working in the store for 8 years as a package boy or ‘cerillo’ (a person who helps pack customers’ purchases in supermarkets) and his family said that for him working in that warehouse “was a pleasure” because he was fond of his co-workers and customers, to whom he always provided friendly and helpful treatment.
On Saturday, November 1, around 3:00 p.m. local time, the explosion and fire at Waldo’s occurred, which in addition to 24 deaths left 14 people injured, from where the worker was rescued but with burns on 90% of his body. However, he fought for four days to survive, when his death was reported in the intensive care area of the Clínica del Noroeste.
“I receive with deep sadness the news of the death of Mr. Marco Segundo, who unfortunately lost his life due to complications derived from burns suffered in the unfortunate event at Waldo’s that occurred a few days ago in Hermosillo,” said the state president on social networks. “To his family and friends I express my most sincere condolences and I reiterate that they have all the support and accompaniment of my government in these difficult times,” he added.
On the other hand, relatives of María Isabel Morales, 20 years old, an employee of the store and who survived with burns on 40% of her body and had to be transferred to the United States to receive specialized medical care at the Arizona “Halle” Burn Center, of the Valleywise Health Hospital, told EFE that the young woman has shown reactions.
