Deaths in Mexico increased 2.5% in 2024, and remain above the pre-pandemic level

Deaths from all causes increased 2.5% year-on-year in 2024, with 819,672 registered, after record deaths in 2021, but remain above pre-pandemic levels, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Monday.

The 2024 data is compared to the just over 1.12 million deaths reported in 2021 and the more than 1.08 million in 2020, the years with the highest number of deaths in the history of Mexico in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The gross rate registered per 100,000 inhabitants was 630, an increase of 11 units compared to the previous year,” the autonomous institute said in a statement.

Of the total deaths, 55.9% were men, 44% were women, and in 0.1% of cases the gender was not specified.

By age groups, those aged 65 and over were the ones with the highest number of deaths, with 57.9% of the deaths recorded, the Inegi said.

Main causes of death in Mexico

Of the total deaths in 2024, 90% were due to diseases and health-related problems and 10% were due to external causes, such as accidents, homicides and suicides, mainly.

The institute recorded heart disease as the main cause of death in Mexico, with 192,518 deaths from this cause.

The second cause of death is diabetes (112,577) and the third is malignant tumors (95,108), while the fourth was liver diseases (40,645).

He also highlighted that accidents were the fifth cause of death, with 39,919 registered, while homicides were the eighth cause of death, with 33,550, a little more than the 32,252 that were registered in 2023.

The figures that Inegi analyzed were obtained through death certificates from the Civil Registry Offices and the Forensic Medical Services. It was complemented with the death certificates from the Civil Registry and the statistical notebooks provided by the Public Ministry Agencies.
