The demand for artificial intelligence specialists (AI) increased by 95% in Mexico in the last year, according to a report prepared by the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) in Mexico and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
The study, entitled ‘The future of data science and AI as an accelerator for tomorrow’s professionals’, analyzes how new technologies are redefining the tasks of professionals in the country and in the region.
“More than 14,000 job offers linked to artificial intelligence, such as Data Analyst, Business Intelligence, data scientists or specialists in Machine Learning, grew 95% in Mexico between September 2024 and September 2025,” Jorge Torres Jiménez, Vice Chancellor for Strategy and Development in Mexico, told Efe.
The report estimates that, in 2025, half of the tasks will be automated and that, between 2025 and 2030, there will be a structural transformation of 22% in the labor market.
During a conversation conducted at the Faculty of Accounting and Administration of the UNAM, experts explained the factors that are promoting the displacement of human activities in different sectors.
Torres warned that between 2030 and 2050 92 million jobs could disappear in the world, although at the same time 170 million new places will arise.

“There are roles in strong growth, such as data specialists, Fintech or AI, but others will tend to disappear, including cashiers, sales auxiliaries or graphic designers,” he said.
The Knowledge Observatory of UNIR accounted for more than 2.8 million vacancies in employment portals of Mexico and Latin America, of which 65,838 corresponded to data science and AI, with an increase in employment of 300% in the last five years.
The analysis included job offers published in Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Guatemala, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Nicaragua and Argentina.
AI and educational challenge
The rector of unite in Mexico, Francisco David Mejía Rodríguez, stressed that artificial intelligence “will mark a milestone” in educational institutions and in the disciplines of the future.
“In a world where technology progresses, we cannot afford to stay behind. The main challenge is employability and how we prepare our students for a market that demands skills that barely emerge. The answer is not only in theory, but in the practical integration of these tools in training,” he said.

For its part, Myrna Hernández Gutiérrez, a graduate in computer science, recalled that companies such as Microsoft and Walmart have cut 6,000 and 1,500 jobs, respectively, in restructuring processes.
“There is no reason to worry, because in the industrial revolution there was also replacement of people with machines and yet society managed to adapt,” he recalled.
Hernández added that the use of AI can increase the productivity of certain jobs and free routine tasks, which would allow to concentrate on more value activities.
