The Democratic Party on Monday asked an American court to block the decree of President Donald Trump who reviews the electoral system, arguing that the changes run the risk of denying eligible citizens the right to vote.
In a lawsuit filed in a Federal Court in Washington, the National Democratic Committee said Trump exceeded his authority in the order of March 25 that requires voters to demonstrate that they are US citizens, preventing states from telling the votes by mail received after the day of the elections and threatening to remove the federal financing from those who breach the order.
“The decree aims to impose radical changes in the way in which Americans register to vote, cast their vote and participate in our democracy, all of which threatens to deprive the right of vote to legal voters and nothing of which it is legal,” said the lawsuit, presented by the veteran Democratic lawyer Marc Elias and other lawyers of his firm.
Senator Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries representative, leaders of Democratic minorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives, respectively, are also demanding in the case.

Trump has long questioned the electoral system
A spokesman for the Department of Justice said that “he has strongly defended the executive actions of President Trump, including the order to preserve and protect the integrity of US elections, and will continue to do so.”
The government previously argued that the order will prevent foreign citizens from interfering with the US elections.
Trump has long questioned the electoral system and continues to affirm falsely that his defeat in 2020 against Democrat Joe Biden was the result of generalized fraud. The president and his Republican allies have also made unfounded statements about the generalized vote of non -citizens, which is illegally and rarely occurs.
In their demand, the Democrats said that the Constitution empowers the States and Congress – not the President – to control how federal elections are carried out. They said this is essential to make sure that the presidents do not try to change the electoral rules to favor themselves.
