The American actor Denzel Washington, interpreter in titles such as ‘Malcom X’, ‘Training Day’ or ‘John Q’, collected a gold palm of honor, which was delivered by surprise in Cannes.
Washington, 70, ignored that this award was going to be given when he presented this afternoon at the Croisette for the premiere of ‘Highest 2 Lowest’, the new Spike Lee movie, which was presented in this 78th edition of the Cannes Festival out of competition.
He crossed the red carpet with the rest of the film’s team, which also stands out figures such as Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Elijah Wright or the rapper at $ Ap Rocky, but once inside the great Lumière theater he was called to the stage.
“We have something special to give him, Mr. Denzel Washington,” Spike Lee read to the microphone, while the artistic delegate of the Thierry Frémaux festival, approached with a box, accompanied by the president of the contest, Iris Knobloch.

“It is the golden palm of honor for Denzel Washington,” Frémaux announced, unleashing a great applause and public cheers.
Very excited, the actor asked the audience to sit down to be able to speak, recognizing that the tribute had caught him by surprise.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you all (…) we are a very privileged group of this room because we can make movies and wear beautiful slots and clothes and pay us for it. We feel blessed without measure, I feel blessed without measure,” he said.
Cannes usually delivers more than a golden palm of honor in each edition – sometimes, as this time, by surprise – and this year it was only known about a honoree, actor Robert De Niro, who already picked up the award during the last opening ceremony.
