MEXICO CITY.- With 353 in favor, 126 against and zero abstentions, the disappearance of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (CONEVAL) was completed in the Deputies, so its functions will pass to the INEGI, according to a note from the Quadratín news agency.

The Plenary San Lázaro generally approved reforms to the General Law of Social Development, to the Federal Budget and Fiscal Responsibility, and of government accounting.

The promoters of the disappearance of Coneval argue that the State’s ability to evaluate the impact of social development policy is sought to strengthen.

They add that the transfer of functions to the Statistics Institute will be to eliminate duplication and optimize public resources, and to avoid disagreements between information production and the integral evaluation of social development policy, as well as the measurement of poverty.

In the presentation, Merilyn Gómez Pozos de Morena, stressed that the ultimate goal of this reform is to achieve the State better, to give accounts with more rigor and act with greater justice and efficiency.

While PRI Lorena Piñon said that the reform is not an administrative reorganization but an attack on the state’s ability to know and account for poverty.

Héctor Saúl Téllez, of the PAN, indicated that the extinction of Coneval is a loss for the nation, which weakens the necessary counterweights in government and generates opacity, and is part of a systematic strategy to destroy the democratic and institutional life of the country.

After the approval of the reform in December by the Senate, the Coneval indicated that the legislative decision represented the elimination of the institution that built credibility before the citizenship, with independent, particisal evaluations and that gave evidence about the landscape of the country’s social development in the last two decades.

He added that its elimination meant the possible loss of highly qualified human capital, made up of about 200 workers.
