The number of captured migrants illegally crossing the border between the United States and Mexico in February is on the way to approaching a monthly record, they told Reuters a spokesman for the United States National Security Department and two other sources.
The United States border patrol is on its way to detaining about 11,000 immigrants on the border in February, when there are less than two days left for the end of the month, sources told Reuters.
The agency has arrested a daily average of about 400 people a day in the last three weeks, DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin and a source said.

President Donald Trump took a series of measures to deter illegal immigration after returning to the White House on January 20, saying that the actions were necessary after the high levels of migration under his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Among the measures taken by Trump are the total prohibition of asylum on the border and the increase in military personnel to contribute to border security.
The monthly border patrol statistics date back to 2000. The lowest monthly total currently registered is April 2017, when the agency arrested 11,127 people at the beginning of Trump’s first mandate.
