Disney content could be removed from YouTube TV this week: here’s what you need to know

Disney content could be removed from YouTube TV this week as the two platforms clash over the terms of an expiring streaming deal, in the latest major streaming dispute involving YouTube TV.

Key data

The streaming deal between YouTube TV and Disney expires Thursday night at 11:59 p.m. EDT, meaning that if a deal isn’t reached sooner, Disney content could be removed from the streaming service.

YouTube accused Disney of “proposing costly economic terms” that would raise prices and reduce options for YouTube TV customers, “while benefiting Disney’s own live TV products, such as Hulu + Live TV and, coming soon, Fubo.”

YouTube indicated that if Disney content is unavailable for an extended period, a $20 credit will be given to the platform’s subscribers.

Meanwhile, Disney claimed that Google, YouTube’s parent company, is “taking advantage of its position at the expense of its own customers.”

What Disney shows and channels could YouTube TV lose?

ESPN and ABC are in the crosshairs, according to Disney, which said in a statement that YouTube TV subscribers could lose access to “NFL, college football, NBA and NHL seasons, and much more.”

Important figure

15%. That is the year-on-year increase in the audience of Disney networks in homes with YouTube TV, according to several media outlets.

Key context

YouTube TV faced at least five streaming disputes this year alone, with Paramount, Fox, NBCUniversal, Televisa Univision and Disney. Disagreements with Paramount, Fox and NBCUniversal were resolved shortly before the streaming deadline, while the dispute with Televisa Univision caused the Spanish-language platform to become unavailable on YouTube TV on September 30.

Disney had previously had a streaming dispute with YouTube TV, failing to reach an agreement with the platform in 2021, when Disney content was briefly removed.

The platform, which offers a basic plan of $82.99 per month, is one of the most popular cable alternatives on the market and has around 10 million users subscribed to packages with traditional television channels, indicates the Los Angeles Times.
