Donald Trump, his military ideas for Mexico

One of the characteristics of Donald Trump’s second mandate is that of speed. He is in a hurry and that is why he does not stop at the consequences, many of them predictable, for his actions.

We have seen it on the subject of tariffs, in their insistence on appropriating Greenland, in systematic violation of the rule of law in regards to the treatment given to migrants, and in the various bravates that the international sphere usually star.

In the field of security this can have implications of different depth for Mexico.

Trump told President Claudia Sheinbaum the possibility that the United States Army collaborates to face organized crime in Mexican territory.

The proposal was rejected, of course, but the idea of sending troops is caressed by the most conservative and virulent sectors north of the Bravo River.

For these groups, the proclamation of acting in Mexico has political dividends, calls for the action of interventionism, but it is very complicated that this becomes concrete actions.

First, by the military themselves, reluctant to an adventure of these characteristics, which usually imply problems immediately and that extend over time.

Second, and also relevant, for the position of the Mexican government, which has made it clear that this is not a productive route, if what is intended is to maintain collaboration and that there are very clear impediments is terms of sovereignty.

In addition, fentanyl traffic will not end only with police actions and much less if it is not accompanied by a reduction in demand in the United States.

But Trump is unpredictable and will continue to press, because it is a framework of acting in which he can be won, beyond that it is demagogy and that its purpose is focused on maintaining backs in the face of the fall of its popularity.

It would be naive, however, underestimate the springs and interests that are behind an adventure of those characteristics, often linked to the Armento sale sector and the more influential ultra -right actors.

Given this, the prudent is to maintain the collaboration between the security agencies of both countries and give concrete results.

Not because Trump is to be listened to, but because it is an urgency, and an inalienable obligation, to guarantee security in high influence territories of the bandits.

But at the same time, each advance in the construction of peace and the weakening of criminal gangs is also a point against the narrative that sees Mexico as the problem and not as part of a solution that, to be lasting, must have a multinational character.
