“The question is what will the United States do to meet the demand of their consumers? They do not have the production and supply capacity, the strongest season in California occurs between April and June and its largest lot was 7 thousand tons, when last week we exported 23 thousand tons,” said Roberto Herrera Moreno.
In Mexico, avocado export is only authorized for Michoacán and Jalisco, the last year there were 1.8 million tons of this fruit in the first state and 50 percent were destined for the United States. Jalisco produced 350 thousand tons and 34 percent allocates our main commercial partner.
For the 2024-2025 season, a minimum production of 1.2 million tons for the United States market is expected, of which 10 percent were exported for the Super Bowl.
In the United States, 88 percent of what is consumed of avocado comes from Mexico, which represents between 20 and 25 thousand tons exported weekly.
7 percent correspond to California and 5 percent are divided between Chile, Colombia, Peru and the Dominican Republic.
“Mexico is the largest bidder of this fruit, it is the worldwide reference of avocado export and this is expected to cause between 20 and 30 percent decreased decreases,” he explained.
