Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Pitt season 2, episode 4.Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell) is seemingly in a new and potentially problematic romantic relationship in The Pitt season 2. Romance has been baked into The Pitt since it began through relationships between Dr. Robby and Dr. Collins, mostly offscreen marriages like Dr. Langdon’s, and flirtations between doctors and nurses. The Pitt season 2 doubled down on the romance aspect through Dr. Santos and Dr. Garcia, and there now seems to be a new relationship in the mix.

During The Pitt season 2, episode 4, Dr. Santos (Isa Briones) revealed that Whitaker has been spending time on a farm and “playing house” with the widow of a patient from The Pitt season 1. If Whitaker is dating someone, it would be a big deal, and not only because Whitaker is one of the best characters on the show. His new relationship is shrouded in mystery and potentially controversy, and it’s worth diving into.

Dr. Whitaker Is Probably Dating Amy, The Farmer’s Wife From The Pitt Season 1

Dr. Santos explained that Whitaker is dating the wife of a farmer who died in the ICU a year before The Pitt season 2. Based on that description, Whitaker has some sort of relationship with Amy Miller (Bailey Gavulic). Amy’s husband, Teddy, was a farmer who was severely burned in a gas tank explosion and airlifted to Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Though the emergency room doctors stabilized Teddy, he evidently died shortly thereafter in the intensive care unit.

Whitaker, for his part, asserted that he’s not dating Amy. Whitaker grew up on a farm, and he claims that he’s simply helping her take care of the land while she cares for her infant, as she was pregnant in The Pitt season 1. Whitaker also said that he sometimes misses home, so he may be visiting the farm out of homesickness.

Despite Whitaker’s assertions, there’s a real possibility that he is dating Amy Miller. Whitaker consoled Amy in The Pitt season 1, and they seemed to hit it off initially. Santos is also suspicious of how much time Whitaker spends at the Miller farm. If he’s romantically interested in Amy, it would explain why he visits her so frequently. He also got defensive when Santos said he was “playing house,” which is yet another sign that he’s dating Amy or at least interested in her.

Whitaker’s Relationship With Amy Could Be Good News For His Future In The Pitt

If Whitaker really is dating Amy Miller, it could be a good sign for his longevity in the cast of The Pitt. Above all, The Pitt strives for realism, and one of the ways it accomplishes that is by having a frequently changing cast. Like doctors in the real world, the doctors in the show often leave as they take on new jobs at other hospitals. Dr. Collins is the prime example of this: Whitaker explained that she’s not in The Pitt season 2 because she finished her residency.

Shippers Were Right?! The Pitt Season 2 Promises A New Workplace Romance

It looks like The Pitt season 2 is setting up a long-awaited romantic pairing between two of PTMC’s doctors, and fans should be excited about it.

Since The Pitt‘s characters are always subject to moving away from PTMC, Whitaker is also subject to disappearing from the cast at some point. He’s only in his first year of residency, so Whitaker likely wouldn’t leave until The Pitt season 5 or later, but he could still leave. If he’s dating Amy, however, Whitaker would have a vested interest in staying at PTMC after his residency is over. Unlike Collins or Dr. Mohan, he wouldn’t have a reason to leave The Pitt if Amy was keeping him in the Pittsburgh area.

Is Whitaker’s New Relationship Problematic?

When Javadi heard about Whitaker’s relationship with Amy, she described it as “messy,” and she may be right. There are a lot of moral and ethical concerns with Whitaker potentially dating Amy. Amy is the wife of a former patient of Whitaker’s. While they weren’t dating while Amy’s husband was a patient, there’s still a power imbalance at play, and Amy likely has some strong emotions surrounding Whitaker’s relation to her late husband.

Aside from Whitaker’s profession, there are also some concerns about how he started this relationship. The Pitt season 2 takes place just 10 months after season 1, when Amy’s husband presumably died. Amy is by all means still a grieving widow and newly single mother. She’s probably emotionally and financially vulnerable, and Whitaker may be (likely unknowingly) taking advantage of her.

This is all, however, just speculation. Whitaker may very well truly only be helping Amy out of the goodness of his heart, and he may truly only see her as a friend. Whitaker did grow up on a farm, so being friends with someone who reminds him of home isn’t inconceivable. Alternatively, Amy can make decisions for herself, and her grief and probable financial instability may not be big factors in her decision to start a relationship with Whitaker in The Pitt.
