Drew Struzan, the artist known for designing the iconic posters for films such as ‘Back to the Future’, as well as the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film series, has died at the age of 78, his brother reported on social media.
“It is with deep regret that I inform you that Drew Struzan left this world yesterday, October 13. I think it is important for everyone to know how many times he told me how happy it made him to know how much his art was appreciated,” Greg Struzan wrote in a statement on Instagram.
Struzan was the illustrator behind some of the most iconic posters in cinema, such as those for ‘Indiana Jones’ and ‘ET the Extra-Terrestrial’, both directed by Steven Spielberg, as well as musical albums by the Beach Boys and the Bee Gees.
“His posters turned many of our films into true destinations… and the memory of those films, as well as the age we were when we saw them, always comes back suddenly with just a glance at his iconic photorealistic images. With his own style invented by him, no one drew like Drew,” Spielberg declared to the specialized media Variety.

Born in Oregon, Struzan began his career selling his works while still a student. Later, he was hired by the company Pacific Eye & Ear, where he designed the cover of Alice Cooper’s ‘Welcome to My Nightmare’ album, considered by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the hundred best rock covers of all time.
His foray into cinema began in Pencil Pushers with films like ‘Squirm’ or ‘Empire of the Ants’, and after collaborating on the poster for ‘Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope’, he was hired by George Lucas’ production house for the next 35 years.
Other of his best-known posters were ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, ‘The Goonies’ and ‘First Blood’. Struzan announced his retirement from the poster business in 2008, although he had some occasional returns.
