Warning: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 5, “In the Name of the Mother.”There is only one episode left in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1, and the trailer for the finale shows how the characters will have to reckon with recent events.
In the teaser, Dunk (Peter Claffey) is shaken and confused after Baelor Targaryen’s (Bertie Carvel) death, while Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) wishes to stay on as the hedge knight’s squire, but Dunk wants to distance himself from the royal family. It seems as though there will be multiple cases where Dunk disagrees with his new friends about what he should do next. Check out the teaser for episode 6 from HBO below:
More specifically, Dunk is reeling because Baelor was the heir to the Iron Throne — and most believed that he would have been a great king — but Dunk survived while Baelor was among the deaths in the Trial of Seven. However, Lyonel Baratheon (Daniel Ings) apparently thinks that Dunk is idolizing Baelor too much, angrily saying that Baelor fought “against men sworn to protect him. He risked nothing.“
“There’s a war coming. We could be a force you and I,” Lyonel also says. There is also the matter of Dunk having inadvertently taken on the youngest member of the Targaryen family as his squire. Egg’s father, Prince Maekar (Sam Spruell), while dealing with his brother’s death, agrees that Egg should continue his training — but the boy insists he will only be Dunk’s squire.
In the trailer, Dunk responds to him: “Beg your pardon, lord, but I think I’m done with princes.” In another scene, Egg says to Dunk: “Maybe you’re not the knight I thought you were.” Clearly, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ season finale will make some final points on the new series’ core themes of the true meaning of knighthood and intentions of Westeros’ nobles before things conclude.
Dunk set out to become a renowned knight, and he has, to an extent, accomplished this. Everyone saw that he could hold his own during the trial, and now Lyonel may offer him a place in House Baratheon’s service, while Maekar would allow Egg to be taught by him. Lyonel also believes another war could be coming that will affect all of them, which could be the second Blackfyre Rebellion.
But Dunk’s comparatively idealistic worldview has also been shattered. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms points out how corrupt the nobles and knights in this setting often are, but Dunk aspires to be better. However, after what he has experienced, he particularly has a much more jaded perspective on the royal family.
Dunk is also seemingly seen saying goodbye to Raymun Fossoway (Shaun Thomas), another new knight and now Dunk’s friend. Ultimately, the crux of the next episode is set up to be Dunk and Egg‘s relationship, as what Dunk decides about Egg wanting to continue to be his squire will shape the rest of the show. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is already renewed for season 2, and may go on for many more years after this.
The A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 finale will be released on HBO and HBO Max on February 22, 2026.
