Earthquake measuring 6.3 degrees Richter shakes Central America
A 6.3 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in the Salvadoran Pacific shook El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua this Sunday, without authorities initially reporting victims or material damage.
The tremor was recorded at 11:18 local time (17:18 GMT) off the coast of the central department of La Paz, 29 kilometers southwest of the Costa del Sol, according to information from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN).
Official data indicate that the earthquake had a focal depth of 33 kilometers, without triggering a tsunami threat alert for El Salvador.
At least six aftershocks have been recorded in the same area of the earthquake, with magnitudes between 3.8 and 4.8, according to the Salvadoran authorities, who did not initially report any victims or material damage.
The tremor was also felt in 9 of the 22 departments of Guatemala, including the capital, according to the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction of that country, which indicated that no damage was reported to people or structures.
The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala, which recorded the earthquake with its epicenter on the Salvadoran coast with a magnitude of 6.2, called on the population to remain calm and be prepared with the 72-hour backpack.
In Honduras, the Secretariat of National Risk and Contingency Management reported no victims or material damage from the earthquake, which according to social media users was felt strongly in the department of La Paz, a central region of the Central American country.
The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter) indicated for its part that the earthquake as its epicenter in the Salvadoran Pacific was an “event related to the tectonic processes of the collision between the Cocos and Caribe tectonic plates,” according to the local press.
