The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, considered that the country “is in a better situation than its competitors” after the decision of President Donald Trump not to include it in the “reciprocal” tariffs of 10%.
“There are many negotiations in progress with us and other countries, but what I can tell you in general is that Mexico today is already in a situation much better than some of its competitors,” he told the media after an event of the distinctive ‘made in Mexico’ at the headquarters of Bimbo, in the Mexican capital.
“Because the United States, which is still the most developed market in the world, wants more things to occur here in what is North America and reduce its deficit compared to Asia,” he argued.
Ebrard, who this week visited Washington to hold meetings with his counterpart, Howard Lutnick, celebrated Mexico’s position in the midst of the tariff war unleashed by Trump, which has caused commercial reprisals in countries such as China and nervousness in international markets.

“We are the country in the world that has more exports to the United States without a tariff. Today nobody has it. We are in complex negotiations, there is a new commercial order, it is still not clear how it will work, but it will be different from what has been in the past,” he said.
The official said that discounts for brand and origin of the automotive automotive tariffs are negotiated, one of the most important in Mexico, and that Washington has applied a 25% tax of 25% to the products that are outside the TMEC.
“A vehicle discount will be applied, rather by model, depending on how many parts of the United States, there are many technicalities, which is understood by production (…) But we are going well and I understand and I know that because of the integration that exists with the United States we will be better,” he said.
Finally, he said that this relationship between the two countries is “to a large extent because the president (Claudia Sheinbaum) has made a good relationship with President Trump. It is the truth.”
“If we did not have a good relationship, then imagine how we would be,” he said.

Trump announced in February that he would punish Mexico and Canada – to consider that they do not do enough against irregular migration and fentanyl traffic – with a 25 %tariff, although it froze in March the application of this customs tax on the goods included in the Commercial Treaty of EU sealed in 2020 with its two neighbors.
When on April 2 Trump announced what he called “reciprocal tariffs” that involved generalized rates of 10% and higher volumes for other regions and countries – such as China or the European Union (EU) – that export a lot to the US, Mexico and Canada were out of the list of punished countries.
