Mexico City, (EFE) .- The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, said the government is waiting for the publication of discounts, for brand and origin of the auto parts, to tariffs imposed on the automotive industry by the United States.
During his participation in the Mexico Aerospace Fair (FAMX) 2025 in the Air Military Base of Santa Lucía, State of Mexico, Ebrard recalled that Mexico “was not subject to reciprocal tariffs”, announced by President Donald Trump on April 2.
“Most of our trade has no tariffs, which has tariffs are motor vehicles, we are waiting for the rule that will be published today or Monday, how discounts will be applied,” he said.
On discounts, the official explained that the most integrated automotive industry to the United States with more US components is the Mexican.

“When we signed the Mexico Treaty, the United States and Canada (TMEC) in 2019 we said that we were going to increase the regional content, the three countries do so, then they will make discounts for model, the more components they have from the region, the cheapest the famous tariff,” he said.
On April 11, Ebrard explained that Mexico negotiated discounts for brand and origin of auto parts for tariffs imposed on the automotive industry, one of the most important in Mexico, and that Washington has applied a tax of 25% to the products that are out of the TMEC.
“We still do not finish the negotiation, but we are on a good way (…) This week there was a meeting, on Wednesday, every week we are there, they already know me (…) I and the team go every week because we have to persevere, be close, convince, persuade and avoid any evil,” said the secretary.
Trump announced in February that he would punish Mexico and Canada because they do not do enough against irregular migration and fentanyl traffic.

The president imposed a 25%tariff, although he froze in March his application on the goods included in the commercial treaty sealed in 2020.
When on April 2 Trump announced what he called “reciprocal tariffs” that involved generalized rates of 10% and higher volumes for other regions and countries – such as China or the European Union – that export a lot to the US, Mexico and Canada were out of the list of punished countries.
On Monday, President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged that in her April 16 call with Trump, her United States counterpart did not reach an agreement to reduce steel, aluminum and automotive industry tariffs.
