Mexico City.- The American partners of Mexico will wait for the judicial election and evaluate it for its merits, said the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard.

“What they have told me (…) is, ‘we are going to evaluate it for their merits; we are not interested in influencing (…) what we are going to see to set a point of view, is to wait for what it ends, and depending on that we will already give you a point of view or a concern,” he said.

Ebrard said that it has not been an issue in his dialogues with American partners in the framework of the TMEC review, the tariff war that initiated by Donald Trump since his return to the White House, and the accusations for lack of legal certainty and business confidence.

Ebrard, said that Mexico is heading to play a strategic role in a new global commercial order led by the United States, in which the relocation of industries and the strengthening of regional chains consolidate the country as the best positioned partner in front of the world’s largest market.

During the National Meeting of Regional Directors (RNCR) 2025 of BBVA Mexico, Ebrard said that North America lives an accelerated reconfiguration of their economic relations, driven by the need to reduce its dependence on Asia, especially China, in key sectors such as pharmaceutical, semiconductors, medical technology and electromovility.

“We are going to see an unprecedented effort to generate relocation in fields where it is vital to reduce dependence on Asia,” he said.

He pointed out that while the United States imports almost 300,000 million dollars in pharmaceutical products, Mexico barely exports 1,000 million, which represents a huge opportunity.

In this context, he stressed that Mexico is the only country with which EU maintains commercial steel surplus, and that about 90% of bilateral trade flows without tariffs, an advantage without comparison between the treaties signed by Washington.

Ebrard also acknowledged that the Government has had as one of its main concerns avoid unnecessary confrontation with EU, maintain a firm dialogue and align its economic policy to the new regional reality.

“The reality is that the integration between Mexico and the US is of such a size that the benefits of both parties are so large that this has played a favorable role to the interests of Mexico and the EU in the long term,” he said.

Ebrard stressed that Mexico must act quickly to take advantage of this historical window and even mentioned that direct foreign investment could double of taking advantage of the relocation of global supply chains.

“This may mean duplicating the foreign investment of Mexico. Maybe more. It depends on what we do, what we agree and how we participate,” Ebrard concluded.

On imports from Asia, particularly from China and Vietnam, Ebrard explained that inspections and sanctions have intensified to import companies that operate irregularly, even canceling records and freezing accounts.

In this sense, Ebrard explained that “it is not a issue against China or Vietnam”, but against those who violate, seek to use the country to reach the US market, which added, “puts credibility at risk.”
