MEXICO CITY.- The negotiation strategy of President Trump cannot be modified, but what Mexico does is build a very large basis of trust and certainty, said the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard.

“This is going to lead is a growing confidence in the ability of Mexico and its president of carrying out what follows, because bets yesterday were 90 against 10,” he said regarding the pause for 90 days of additional tariffs on Mexico.

“90% told you: ‘They are going to put a tariff or they will have to pay.

After qualifying the pause as a great achievement, Ebrard said optimistic because Mexico has a better position in front of the US than any other country in the tariff theme.

“If you see 84% of our trade without tariff against a European Union that will have to pay 700,000 million dollars free disposition to the United States to participate in its market, with a general rate of 15%, because evidently Mexico’s position is much better,” he said at the end of an entrepreneurial event.

He said that Mexico’s position against the rest of the countries is not a small thing and that this must be recognized to President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Ebrard did not rule out that the pause can be extended for another 90 days and I trust that the next step will be the beginning of the work for the review of the TMEC.

By announcing the postponement this Thursday, Trump said Mexico had agreed to end its non -tariff commercial barriers.

In this regard, Ebrard said that the US Government gave a long time delivered to Mexico its “concerns” in commercial matters, and that the same did the Mexican administration.

“That includes intellectual property. On our side why the panel of the rules of origin (in the automotive sector) that Mexico won, or not 100%has not been fulfilled, or the provisions we must have to verify the agricultural products and a series of topics,” has not been fulfilled. “

“But we have to work with a view to the review of the treaty, we are already with the USTR (the commercial representation of the United States),” he added.

Trump agreed with Sheinbaum postponing for 90 days the additional 30% tariffs that would go into force on August 1, after a call made this Thursday.

The extension avoids the 30% tariff on most non -automotive and non -metallic Mexican goods that comply with the commercial agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada.

About 85% of Mexican exports comply with the rules of origin delineated in the TMEC, which protects them from 25% tariffs related to fentanyl, according to the Ministry of Economy.

Trump said that EU would continue to impose a 50% tariff on Mexican steel, aluminum and copper and a 25% tax on Mexican cars and the goods that do not comply with the TMEC subject to tariffs related to the fentanyl crisis in the North American country.

Trump is expected to issue proclamations of tariff fees later this Thursday for countries that have not reached commercial agreements before the period of 0:01 am.

“The rest of the countries that either do not have an agreement or have a letter, will have news of this administration before midnight,” said White House Secretary Karoline Leavitt, at a press conference.
