The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, said that the TMEC will continue beyond 2026, although its review and renegotiation will be difficult and nothing simple.
“You have to define July 1, 2026, whether or not it follows, but in 2026 the TMEC will follow,” he said in the framework of the exhibition Alas de Talavera, images of the Mexican eagle.
The official recalled that the government’s goal is to reach 2026 with all the necessary elements to review and renegotiate the TMEC.
The members of the agreement started the consultations for the review of the TMEC.
“In a coordinated manner at the same time the three countries are going to make our consultations, from there it already proceeded to a detail review,” said the official.

“There is a very good sign with the beginning of public consultations for the review of the TMEC, because in January many thought what the future of the treaty is?” He said.
Ebrard stressed that these consultations will collect opinions from productive sectors, unions, academia and civil society, in order to prepare a base document for negotiation.
“It is a good sign, although I know that it will be a difficult process, nothing simple, but we are already there, we are already in the consultations,” he said.
The Secretariat published this morning in the Official Gazette of the Federation the call to receive comments from any interested person, which can be sent by electronic means or physical for 60 days.

However, Ebrard indicated that the deadline could extend if there was great participation.
“That is why you have to ask, invite and listen (…) that will be like the general framework of the negotiation that there will be. That is the consultation, you have to take it seriously,” he added.
The information collected will be systematized to present it to the president, Claudia Sheinbaum, and subsequently to the Senate, which must review and endorse the country’s position in the negotiation.
The secretary insisted that the citizen consultation will be key to setting the national position.
“The consultation is to say: ‘This is the evaluation that the Mexicans of this treaty have, this we want to change and we want it to be put on.’
