Mexico expects to initiate a review of the Trilateral Commercial Agreement with the United States and Canada in the second half of this year, earlier, to provide clarity to consumers and investors, said Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard.

“We estimate that we will start the conversations in the second half of the year,” the official told reporters in the framework of an event with Fintechs.

“We hope that they will be realized as soon as possible and that we can reach an agreement soon,” he added.

The TMEC will be reviewed next year. President Donald Trump has pressed to renegotiate the agreement in advance.

Ebrard said that early review could cause commercial policies between the three nations to be “easier and more clear” for both consumers and investors.

“The faster the uncertainty is reduced, it is better for investment and for our daily lives,” Ebrard said during the announcement of a chatterization program in the State of Mexico and the presentation of digital payments of public transport in that entity.

Mexico, the United States and Canada are in the same idea for the review of the TMEC, he said.

He added that in negotiations on tariffs there have been points of difference “and there will be, but they are in a cordial tone.”

He added that in the Secretary of Commerce of the United States a reasonable person has found that he listens to arguments.

He recalled that much of Mexico’s trade with the United States has no tariffs, although there are many issues to discuss: “I am visiting Washington very frequently in the negotiation of tariffs.”

The official added that the delivery of debit cards to be used in the transport services of the State of Mexico improves the quality of life of 30 million people, which is equivalent to the population of Israel and Singapore together.
