The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, warned that the imposition of 25% of tariffs on Mexican goods, signed by the president of the United States, Donald Trump, is a “flagrant violation of the TMEC” that, precisely, was negotiated in his first mandate (2017-2021).
Trump signed on Saturday the executive orders that enter into force, starting at 00.01 on Tuesday, February 4 during Washington hours (05.01 GMT), 25% tariffs for the merchandise of Mexico and Canada (with the exception of oil Canadian, which will have only 10%) and 10% for China, which can unleash a commercial war.
“The executive order that establishes 25 % to our exports to the United States is a flagrant violation of the TMEC that we negotiate with President Trump himself and has been the best commercial treaty in recent years! Shot on the foot! ”Ebrard said in a message on the social network X.
In December 2019, the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (TMEC) was signed during Trump’s first government.
Minutes before, Ebrard had wrote another message: “Leaving the National Palace. Full support for President Claudia Sheinbaum against the threat of the United States government. Proud of its temperance and firmness, it will lead us to fruition. Ongoing plan B. To close ranks. We will win! ”
While at noon, Ebrard said Mexico will defend itself against “any commercial arbitrariness” of the United States, after a meeting with Sheinbaum and businessmen.
After Trump’s decision, Sheinbaum summoned his cabinet to a meeting on Saturday afternoon at the National Palace attended by Ebrard along with the Foreign Relations Secretaries (SRE, Foreign Ministry) Juan Ramón de la Fuente; of Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena; of the Treasury, Rogelio Ramírez de la O, and of the Interior (Interior), Rosa Icela Rodríguez.
Sheinbaum’s meeting with his cabinet is the second in less than 24 hours on tariffs.
Before, in a message on social network X, President Sheinbaum “categorically rejected” that the Government of Mexico has alliances with organized crime while proposing “dialogue” to the president of the United States, Donald Trump, and instructed ” Implement tariff and non -tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests. ”
“I instruct the Secretary of Economy to implement the plan B that we have been working on, which includes tariff and non -tariff measures in defense of Mexico’s interests,” Sheinbaum said, without giving details about it.
In addition, Sheinbaum proposed to Trump to establish “a work table with our best public safety and health teams,” and pointed out that “it is not with the imposition of tariffs how problems are solved, but speaking and dialoguing.”
