Lizzeth Pacheco, head of promotion and support for the new ideas of the Ministry of Economy, stressed that micro, small and medium -sized companies (MSMEs) Mexican are interested in carrying the “made in Mexico” label, and which is reflected in the growing number of applications to take the certification.
“It is important to mention that, in the past, before making the relaunch of the seal made in Mexico last February, we were receiving approximately 70 bimonthly requests. We make the relaunch and we have received in less than a month more than 1,000 applications,” said the official at the press conference for the 2025 business factory inauguration, of GS1 Mexico.
He added that it has been very pleasant to know that the ‘made in Mexico’ seal was long awaited by the country’s economic population “that has had a great demand.”
The government of President Claudia Sheinbaum relaunched earlier this year the “made in Mexico” seal to strengthen the domestic market and encourage the consumption of products with national content, as well as the incorporation of SMEs and large companies into global value chains.

The badge recognizes in a first stage products elaborated and/or assembled in the country that meet high quality standards, prioritizes supplies of national origin and the fulfillment of any of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which makes visible the commitment of companies, as well as Mexico with the 2030 Agenda worldwide.
As of May 23, some 623 companies already have the authorization of the use of the ‘made in Mexico’ logo, with a total of 1,983 products, ranging from the sectors, automotive, aeronautical, electrotechnical, white line, food, refreshing, alcoholic, textile, cosmetics, clothing, paper industry, among others, according to information from the Secretariat of Economy.
In this regard, Lizzeth Pacheco indicated that the process for the authorization of the use of ‘made in Mexico’ takes about 10 days, since the information provided by the company that wants to carry the badge, verify and ratify it must be reviewed. Likewise, the area of regulations of the Ministry of Economy notifies companies if they lack more information to obtain the certificate.
“The specialists in the area of regulations have to verify, depending on the application, the information, and that takes time. Then, we would only ask them for their support to be patients. We are considering all the requests that make us reach. However, as I insist, we have received thousands (of applications) and that is very large,” he asked.
Given the accusations of the existence of products from China that have a false label of ‘made in Mexico’, the official said that the Secretariat headed by Marcelo Ebrard maintains the ‘cleaning’ initiative, in which premises and points of sale of apocryphal products are identified and are closed and the merchandise is seized.
Also, the agency works with customs and state governments to identify these products.
Juan Carlos Molina, general director of GS1 Mexico, indicated that they work with the dependence on promoting the ‘made in Mexico’ seal and, in addition, companies can register in the Infocode application, with which consumers can know more about the products they buy, such as the origin, ingredients and certifications, among other issues.
In addition, the manager indicated that with the new 2D codes, which will gradually replace the traditional barcodes, it will be possible to know if a product is authentic or falsified. For example, he cited the case of artisanal beer called El Charro beer, which already has a 2D code, which contains information of the product that can be scanned.
This type of 2D codes, which consist of QR codes that will make the function of bar codes, will be more common as the years go by, and the manager considers that in 2032 many manufacturers will integrate the QR codes into their labels.
On the other hand, the Secretary of Economic Development (SEDECO) of Mexico City, Manola Zabalza, indicated that in the capital of the country there are 460,000 economic units, of which 99% are MSMEs and generate about 80% of the works.
“Only in these last six months more than 12,000 small and medium enterprises have been formalized in the city and we want to continue growing and hand in hand with institutions such as GS1 to formalize companies, lowering the costs (of formalization) we can have very good results in the city,” he added.
Business factory is the GS1 event, the retail incubator, in which the SMEs and dozens of retail chains, such as Walmart, Chedraui, Sears or Eating, so that producers can place their products on the sales floor.
Jorge Garcés, president of GS1, indicated that for this business factory edition, more than 6,000 appointments between SMEs and Retailers are scheduled. “Each business appointment is an opportunity to transform the future of these companies and their families. Business factory is the space where gears begin to connect to move the economy of the country,” he said.
