Sean “Diddy” Combs is participating in a prison sobriety program that could reduce his 50-month sentence by up to a year, while he also teaches his own entrepreneurship class and works in a chapel while serving his sentence at the federal prison in Fort Dix, New Jersey.

Key data

Less than two weeks after reporting to the federal prison in Fort Dix, Combs, 56, enrolled in a drug rehabilitation program that could reduce his prison sentence by up to a year, his spokesperson Juda Engelmayer told NBC News early Tuesday.

Combs was found guilty of prostitution charges following a high-profile trial that focused largely on drugged-up sexual performances he arranged with sex workers known as “freak-offs,” but the music mogul’s lawyers said he remained sober for the first time in 25 years while he was incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.

Combs is also resuming a course he previously taught to Brooklyn jail inmates called “Free Game with Diddy,” a program focused on entrepreneurship, Engelmayer told NBC News.

According to Engelmayer, Combs also accepted a job in the prison chapel, which CBS News reported citing a corrections official is one of the few places in the jail where inmates can gather freely.

Engelmayer also denied a TMZ report that claimed that over the weekend, Combs was arrested for illicit consumption of alcohol.

Forbes has contacted Combs’ representatives for comment.

Surprising fact

Combs faced discipline for making a prohibited phone call on Nov. 3, just days after being transferred to Fort Dix, CBS News reported. The call was apparently with several members of his legal team, although prison rules prohibit inmates from adding people to calls, and recipients can only be those on authorized calling lists.

Combs claimed to be unaware of these rules, although he could lose 90 days of telephone privileges and 90 days of prison store privileges.

What do we know about Fort Dix?

Fort Dix is a low-security federal prison located in southern New Jersey, about 65 miles from Philadelphia. It is the largest federal prison in the United States, with more than 4,100 inmates. Notable inmates such as Martin Shkreli, the former pharmaceutical executive convicted of securities fraud, and Joe Giudice, who was convicted along with his wife Teresa Giudice of various financial crimes, including bankruptcy fraud and wire fraud, have been held there.

Christopher Zoukis, a lawyer and author of “The Federal Prison Handbook,” told CNN that Fort Dix is a peculiar place and that he generally advises his clients to avoid it, alleging that the facility has had problems with drugs, gang violence and staff shortages. Zoukis added, however, that one positive aspect of Fort Dix is the drug rehabilitation program, which Combs enrolled in and which could help inmates get a reduced sentence.

When does Diddy get out of jail?

Combs is scheduled to be released on May 8, 2028, but the rap mogul and his lawyers have repeatedly attempted to bring forward his release. His rehabilitation program could reduce his sentence, and last week a federal judge granted his attorneys’ request for an expedited appeal. Oral arguments on the appeal could be held in April.

Key background

Combs was sentenced in October, months after a jury found him guilty of two of the five charges prosecutors brought against him. He was convicted of two counts of transportation for prostitution, crimes that prosecutors say he committed by transporting sex workers across state lines to have sexual encounters with his ex-girlfriends.

Prosecutors also accused Combs of coercing his ex-girlfriends into having sex and running a vast criminal organization, charging him with human trafficking and conspiracy, but the jury acquitted him of these charges, which could have resulted in a life sentence.
