Ernesto Zedillo’s prophecies

Ernesto Zedillo replaces the issue of the future of democracy in Mexico. He did it a few months ago, and again the weaknesses and risks of the election of ministers, judges and magistrates, coupled with the damage that already generates the disappearance of the autonomous organs and to which it can be generated when the electoral reform is approved.

The former president granted an interview in Nexos and published a wide text in Free lyrics. A lucky coincidence and, in addition, in two of the publications with the greatest analytical draft over decades and until today.

For the former president of Mexico, the present is high irrigation and, therefore, the future looks gloomy, loaded with stalks.

Dr. Zedillo, as it usually reminds, is not affected by the statements and much less those that have to do with the management of public affairs in the country that ruled.

Since the end of his mandate, he self -imposed a kind of silence, which only broke when the harmful effects that the dismantling of the Judiciary would have already been glimpsed and proposed that the measure be suspended, proposal, which, as is evident, was not heard.

Now, on the other hand, he opted for the defense and explanation of the reforms that he promoted, since the first days of his arrival to power and in particular the change in the Supreme Court of Justice, reducing the number of ministers and expanding their powers.

One aspect, to take into account, is that everything was done in agreement with the political parties, who were convinced and in no way were they overwhelmed.

This was amalgamated with the reforms that were also made in the electoral field, giving the IFE (now INE) autonomy and promoting land with greater opportunities for political forces.

The change, transcendent, without a doubt, led to the PRI to lose the absolute majority in the Chamber of Deputies, that Mexico City was governed by the PRD in 1997 and in 2000, to the first alternation in the Presidency of the Republic, with the triumph of the PAN.

An important contrast, before the Tsunami that unleashed then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador with the initiatives he announced since February 2024 and that one by one has been approved.

Dr. Zedillo affirms that “he trusted that any new reform would reinforce our democracy until it became solid and irreversible, and that the legality would always be respected.”

This was no longer like that, and reproaches “the real factors of power” to which he sees very quiet, perhaps because they think that what is happening can favor them. To them, the ex -president, predicts that they will have a surprise and nothing pleasant.

What remains? What can be done? For now, the complaint, “we must give that battle deliberating, denouncing, arguing, explaining”, what he remembers, and is still paradoxical, that wise advice of the leader of the PMS, Eduardo Valle, former leader of the student movement of 1968, when he maintained, in 1988, that “they can win us with votes in Congress, but not in arguments or ideas.”

Now, before the closure, there is the possibility of testifying, as does Dr. Zedillo himself.
